Strength, resilience & leadership

A tribute to Queen Nanny’s leadership and resilience, this work brings African heritage, Caribbean identity and feminine sovereignty into a single, commanding image.

This painting honors Nanny of the Maroons, one of Jamaica’s most revered National Heroes and a timeless symbol of female strength, resilience, and leadership. Queen Nanny was not only a warrior but a strategist, spiritual guide, and protector of her people. As leader of the Maroon settlement known as Nanny Town in the Blue Mountains, she trained her warriors in guerrilla warfare and led a sustained resistance against British colonial forces, securing freedom and autonomy for generations to come.

Sir Calvert Jones presents Queen Nanny in a moment of poised resolve — her posture upright, her gaze forward, carrying both weapon and wisdom. The painting does not depict aggression alone, but controlled power: the quiet authority of a woman who understands when to fight, when to endure, and when to lead. Her strength is not loud, but unshakable.

Drawing contemporary inspiration from the commanding presence of General Nanisca as portrayed by Viola Davis in the film The Woman King, this rendition bridges ancestral memory with modern visual language. The parallel is intentional — positioning Queen Nanny not as a figure frozen in history, but as a living archetype of feminine power that continues to resonate across cultures and generations.

Rendered in the bold, expressive palette characteristic of Tropical Realism™, the painting layers emotion, movement, and spirit. The textured strokes and vibrant contrasts reflect the turbulence of the era she lived in, while also celebrating the triumph of resilience over oppression. African heritage, Caribbean identity, and feminine sovereignty converge into a single, commanding image.

This work stands as a tribute not only to Queen Nanny, but to all women who lead in silence, endure in adversity, and rise with purpose. It reminds us that resistance is not only an act of defiance, but an act of love — for land, for people, and for future generations.

Part of the Behind the Art series by Tropical Realism™, this piece contributes to ongoing fundraising efforts in support of Jamaica, aligning heritage, culture, and philanthropy through art.

Queen Nanny’s legacy is one of leadership, resistance, and unyielding strength. To honour these qualities, elements of the Behind the Art process incorporated a model whose presence helped explore the physical and emotional dimensions of feminine power.

Through carefully directed imagery, the collaboration examined posture, stillness, and expression as tools of authority—echoing the quiet strength attributed to Queen Nanny herself. This interpretive process informed the painting’s energy and composition, reinforcing its message beyond historical narrative and into contemporary relevance.

The intention was not to recreate history, but to honour it—allowing the spirit of Queen Nanny to be felt, rather than simply observed.
